I don't know of a source for Canadian shellac flakes, but I do know a source for Canadian Corn Flakes.

I just noticed that LeeValley doesn't sell blonde shellac flakes any more. Does anybody know of a Cdn source for these? I know they're available from LMI (and others?) in the US, but I'd like to get them fairly quickly - without paying a big loadadough to UPS/FedEx. Thanks John |

John, Can't wait to hear on that too, i purchased the orange shellac flakes at Lee Valley for the same reason you mentionned in your post and even if it would give a nice vintage look, i'd rather have the blonde flakes too. Serge |

Serge- The reason I ask is that I decided to put a 'wash coat' aka sealer coat on an Engelmann top this morning and got a very uneven colour with the amber shellac. Fortunately, this was prior to cutting for the rosette, and the top had some extra thickness. With a combination of 'washing' the shellac off with alcohol and a bit of sanding, that's now the bracing side of the top! Back to square one... John |

Home Depot sells Zinsser pre mixed in clear and amber but it's not flakes. Had a look at some of my usual finishing sources and had no luck. |

Ah, that's too bad. I guess it's like when I tried to go buy some lacquer there. I was asked to fill in a form to ask for a customer account... I told them I just wanted to pay up front and didn't want an acount... They said I could buy the lacquer once or twice but that I would have to become a registered customer eventually... |

Hey Rod and all, I just looked online at Home Depot as we don't have one here in Wee Powell River. I guess that doesn't mean they actually have the products they show on line. Richelieu in BC seems to have people walking in off the street doing business when I'm in there. I have a cash account with them with the name of an apartment block. I think I did fill out an application and they gave me a customer # but I don't remember it being a big deal. If you can come up with some sort of business name I don't think you need a tax #.They seem to be getting more into finishes and I think have become the distributor for Mowhawk. (10 min later) And I just went to the Richelieu site. I filled in there form with my customer # and they e-mailed me a 34 digit access code. I'm going to have a hard time remembering that one. And they do have the blond flakes as I see Alain has pointed us to. They're a good company with lots of cool stuff. |

Do you have Menard's stores in Canada? They carry Zinsser Seal Coat. Usually costs less than any other source, too. IIRC, I paid $7.00 US for my last quart. |

Seeing this thread I called the Lee Valley closest to my office to see if they still had some in stock. I thought I'd be the hero and purchase the remaining 5 lbs for my Canadian OLF buds... I struck out! The fellow on the phone chuckled saying a few folks have been calling with the same question -- I dunno why we stopped stocking it. Me thinks its time to send good ole' Mr. Lee a letter! Other Lee Valley stores may still have some in stock. If they do -- they'll sell it to you over the counter. Ron -- what are lemon shellac flakes? -- I've never heard of them -- are they dewaxed? |

john, both woodessence and goudeys will get back to you. both are good sources. i agree that we need a 'luthier's list' of canadian suppliers. i've had great service from all of our american suppliers and i'm sure i'll continue to use them often (just ordered from allied yesterday). but it sure is nice to order from sources here in canada. it saves a bunch on shipping and completely on the whole duty business. by the time american ordered products arrive at my door, the catalogue price is nearly meaningless. probably makes sense to start another thread. i'll follow if you lead. phil |
